Khan!! R.I.P.

400px-Khan!!!

So on our way home tonight, Steve informed me that the great Ricardo Montalban had died today. I, of course, expressed my deep sadness that I would no longer get to hear about that
"Soft Corinthian Leather."

(How many poor Corinthians had to die for that leather, anyway?)
We had only been home 5 minutes when Steve announces, "In honor of the great Ricardo Montalban, I'm going to watch Star Trek II in HD." So here we are - I'm banished to the office, while Steve geeks out in the dark living room. As the credits roll, he says, "This one's for you, Khan." "Star Trek II - The Wrath of Khan," as you may or may not know, is one of Steve's favorite movies. In fact, it was his supremely geeky, unsolicited analysis of why the movie is so good "It's got such character development, and the relationship between Kirk and Khan is really interesting" and his theory on how all Star Trek movies that have even numbers are good, while the odd-numbered ones are bad, that made me fall slightly more in love with his dorky self when we were first dating. Sigh. I guess it's a fitting tribute. And yes, the scenes on Ceti Alpha 6 are really cool, but can someone please save me from "Lyn! The stereo on this is really amazing. I'm hearing things from the bookshelf."

Ha, yes Kevin, I was going to cut her some slack on that one. The fact that she was able to come up with "Ceti Alpha" at all (even with the wrong number) makes her the coolest wife ever.

Ceti Alpha 6?!

THIS IS CETI ALPHA 5!!!

True story: I got to talk to him once (for E! I think, thanks Glenn!) for the release of "Wrath of Khan" on special-edition DVD. I asked him if that was really all him in the movie.

"Oh yes," he said in that magnificent voice of his. "I used to be able to take a quarter and hold it between my pectoral muscles."

I was about to post this info! Damn you, East Coast people and your living in the future! My favorite RM memory: He was on Letterman years and years ago, and Dave asked him, "What is Corinthian leather?"

Without missing a beat, RM says in that alluring accent of his, "It isn't anything."

I was all about to embark on my best Trekkie snark, but then I had to check myself...b/c I love a big space porn drama myself. Geeks gotta stick together.

And RIP, Ricardo.
